Rectified spirit is highly purified ethyl alcohol that has undergone a rectification process. During this procedure, the alcohol-containing liquid is separated into individual fractions: water, fusel oils, methyl and ethyl alcohols. This is done to increase the concentration of pure ethanol and remove impurities.
Due to its high degree of purification, this alcohol is widely used in areas where the quality and purity of raw materials are particularly important: in medicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and perfumery.
According to the conclusion of the Sharia Department of the Halal Standard Committee of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan, the use of rectified alcohol in food products is permitted subject to a number of conditions. First, if the alcohol in the product is used in an amount that does not cause intoxication (even when the product is consumed in large quantities). Second, the alcohol is included in the product not for the purpose of imparting flavor characteristics, but for the purpose of preservation and moisture retention.
This provision does not apply to the use of alcoholic beverages. The use of wine, cognac, liqueurs, and other similar types of alcohol in food products is considered unacceptable and is strictly prohibited.
